La Salle Secondary School, Hohola, Breakfast Club.
La Salle Technical Secondary School, is located in the suburb of Hohola in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. This school began as Hohola Youth Development Centre over 50 years ago and has since grown into a large technical secondary school offering National Curriculum and National Technical Certificate courses to over 1000 boys and girls. The school focuses on providing academic and practical education, particularly for students from the settlements (squatter areas) of Port Moresby who otherwise would not be given a second chance to learn new skills and reach employment. The students who live in settlement areas often lack access to the basic services of water, electricity and sanitation.
In 2021, students at La Salle Technical Secondary School began using the PNG National Curriculum. The school has been very successful with the introduction of the National Curriculum as it was ranked first in PNG for Grade 10 results in the 2024 National Examinations. Br Antony, the Principal, noted that this outcome was “a testament to the dedication of staff and students to strive for excellence despite the adversity faced by so many, each day”.
The Breakfast Club at Hohola is an initiative that provides students with something to eat before they start lessons for the day. Many students arrive as early as 7.00 am at the school, with many waking up around 5.00 am to make their way to school. At the end of the day, students leave at 4.00 pm, some without having eaten any food throughout the day. This is particularly the case for students who live in the settlements. Those students who do have some food often feel embarrassed about eating in front of their friends during breaks. The school organises a free breakfast for students on four days a week and is funded solely by the generosity of the Lasallian network and local businesses in Port Moresby. The number of students receiving a cooked breakfast has increased from 200 to 300 students with the growth of student enrolment at the school.
The Lasallian Foundation acknowledges and thanks the generous individuals and Lasallian schools who have contributed to the Breakfast Club at La Salle Technical Secondary School over many years and encourages new donors to consider this important work.
Our sincere thanks to all who contributed towards this donation. You
