St Bede’s College, Mentone

St Bede’s College is an independent Lasallian Catholic secondary school located on two campuses in the south-east of Melbourne. The Mentone campus caters for boys in Years 7-12, and the East Bentleigh campus (formerly St James College) caters for boys in Years 7-10. St Bede’s College was founded in 1938, and St James College (founded in 1970) became the East Bentleigh campus of St Bede’s College in 2021. The roll of the College is about 1800 students.

The staff and students of St Bede’s College contributed a record amount to the Lasallian Foundation in 2023, following the most successful MAD (Mission in Action Day) fundraising day. The donation is gratefully received and will be allocated to projects in Pakistan, primarily to supplement funds for a building project at St Solomon’s School at Ahmedabad, on the outskirts of Multan. The funds will also contribute significantly to other projects in Lasallian schools in Pakistan.

MAD commenced with performances by the College Band, then a whole College prayer service spiritually prepared us for the day ahead. Following our time of prayer, waves of keen walkers were released to start their 10-kilometre MAD walk along the beach trail. Then, returning a little weary but satisfied, students received a hot dog lunch (over 2000 were cooked and served!), then enthusiastically enjoyed the post-walk program of carnival rides, performances and other activities planned by the College Student Leadership Team.  (these afternoon activities are a recent adjustment to MAD and a conflation of the usual Founder’s Day celebrations).

Ria Greene, Deputy Principal Faith and Mission

The Lasallian Foundation sincerely thanks the wider Mentone community who supported the college and all staff, students and parents who contributed so generously. The ongoing support that St Bede’s College gives to the Lasallian mission in Pakistan is valued.
