Clean water and a healthy community at Gujranwala Pakistan
A water filtration plant for the boys of the hostel is one of the many needs that have been shared with the the Lasallian Foundation in recent years. Serving over 50 students who live on the property and 10 staff, the water filtration plant will keep the community at Gujranwala safe. The limited access to clean drinking water is a problem for the whole of Pakistan, and Gujranwala is no exception. Water-borne diseases like cholera, dracunculiasis, typhoid and paratyphoid fever, hepatitis A& E, diarrhea, and malaria are also very common now because the majority of the population has no proper source of clean drinking water.
The project required several stages to reach completion.
- Using an existing room, it was renovated, including providing new doors and windows to comply with the requirements of the water filtration system.
- The construction works also included creating a 7-tap water station to access clean drinking water.
- The full water station was paved and a pathway was also built and tiled.
- All the sanitary works and new piping, were constructed.
- In the water filtration plant, new boring was completed to access the underground water. A new water pump was also installed.
- A reverse osmosis (RO) filtration system was installed with storage tanks of 1000 litres capacity.
- To provide clean and cool drinking water, a Haier chiller with 1000 litres capacity was also installed.
- Lastly, all the walls, both inside and outside, including door and windows were painted.
Following the project proposal, a total of AUD $11,000 was used to undertake such an important addition to hostel facilities. Mr. Benjamin, the hostel manager, along with Br. Peter Abraham, supervised the project, which was completed between May and July. The Lasallian Foundation wishes to thank the community of Middle Swan who worked tirelessly to raise funds.
